Frequently Asked Questions

What is an automatic standby generator?

An automatic standby generator is a back-up electrical system that operates whether you are at home or away. It automatically supplies power to the circuits you have choosen in your home or business within 30 seconds of a utility outage. After utility power returns, the generator shuts itself down and begins monitoring for the next outage. Our units operate on Natural Gas, Propane or Diesel and sit outside just like a central air conditioning unit.

What will it power?
This is very subjective and depends heavily on your current load requirements; homes are different, personal needs are different. DirectPower Generators offers a variety of power system sizes and options to fit any need. Generators are available sized from 3.5kW to 150kW (larger units available through special order). To make it easy DirectPower Generators offers a free in-house consultation; you guide us through your house and tell us what you want backed up. From this we can accurately size a generator to cover your needs.

Why should I buy an automatic standby generator instead of a portable unit?
While a portable generator does supply power, a home standby unit produces a cleaner, higher quality electricity. It operates whether you are at home or not, and runs a weekly self-test to ensure proper response when it is needed. There are no extension cords to plug in, and no gas tanks to fill. When utility power returns, the home standby generator will shut itself off automatically.

What's the difference between air-cooled and liquid-cooled generators?
Air-cooled units use engines that are specifically designed for smaller applications; they cover essential circuits and back-up power needs in most residential applications. Liquid-cooled units use automotive engines for increased horsepower; this makes them ideal for larger requirements such as whole house power coverage, larger homes, primary power and commercial applications.

Do they have to be maintained?
Just like your car engine, generators require regular maintenance. Periodic oil and filter changes as well as voltage adjustments. Most customers utilize DirectPower Generators yearly service contracts; we inspect your unit yearly and ensure that it is in tip top shape for when it is called upon.

Why is a home standby generator more expensive than a portable generator?
A home standby generator system includes many additional features, including a more complex control system, and usually has more power capacity. It has a weather protective enclosure that is also designed for sound reduction making them neighborhood friendly.

How long does it take?
Depending on the unit you order and our current stock it could take as little as 1 week. If we have to order your unit from one of our manufactures, it typically takes four to six weeks. Once we have your unit, a standard install ranges anywhere from 2 to 4 days; this includes a full unit commissioning and a brief tutorial on how your new unit works.
